Here is what they are saying

  Sophia being regularized

Sophia, one of the largest squatter settlement in the country, is to be converted to a flourishing housing scheme. Prior to the regularization process, the area was merely mud dams, bushes and small shacks.

Today, the area has been transformed into an area that has beautiful houses, paved roads and proper but still developing infrastructure. $250M was expended in the area under the regularization programme.

The Government Information Agency was in the area and spoke to several residents about the area being regularized.

Here is what they had to say:

Christine Angad: I now have my own home and I don't have to squat anymore and people have to come and threaten to throw you out! I have received my land title over two years ago and started building my house immediately. I am also satisfied with the roads and water, although the water situation has to improve somewhat.

Roy Paul: I use to live in Sophia and I am happy to see that the area is being looked after. Look at the roads. It is being done and it is nice to see progress. The water is OK, but the lights and roads are not finished yet. But things are looking good and I thank them for what they are doing.

Joyce Ogle: It gives me a good feeling to have my own home in an area that is regularized and it is a good thing for our youths and I hope that development will continue in the area. I see they are doing the C-Field road but lots more has to be done.

Preston Chance: It is good to see that citizens in this country are able to obtain their own piece of land and I wish to thank the Government for making this become a reality. People in squatting areas now have legal rights to their land.

Bertnarine Sammy: I am looking after my sister house here. She and her husband are in Botswana and they are returning soon to live here in Sophia. I think it was a great move by the Government to regularize the area because many people can call Sophia their home.

Devon Oggis: I am pleased to have my own home because years before people weren't able to achieve this and it is a great start for many youths. This way you can see progress in your life because you know what you want and what you have to do. Right now I am helping to fence the land next to me for my sister.
