Frequency of criminal activities reduced in recent times

Georgetown, GINA, June 19, 2003

Several joint police/army operations were effected, as Guyana saw an increase in criminal activities concentrated on the East Coast of Demerara and Georgetown.
Although criminal activities have resulted in the unfortunate deaths of innocent civilians, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and joint Police/Army operations to combat criminal activities can now be viewed as carrying a fair amount of success.

Since February 2002, the GPF had issued wanted bulletins for 42 notorious criminals who were wanted for crimes ranging from armed robbery to murder. Most of these criminals have been considered as armed and dangerous.

Information available from the GPF shows that 25 of the wanted persons have since died. Their deaths have mainly occurred from confrontations with the police and joint police/army operations.
Seven of the wanted persons have been arrested, while ten persons are still at large.

Since the February 23, 2002 jailbreak where five notorious criminals escaped, there has been an upsurge in criminal activities which resulted in Government implementing strict crime-fighting measures.

Four of the five escapees have since been killed, while the fifth is still on the wanted list.

In June 2002, President Bharrat Jagdeo announced several menus of measures to combat crime.
As a result, millions of dollars were channeled towards purchasing crime-fighting equipment. The forensic capability of the GPF was enhanced with the acquisition of modern laboratory equipment and the employment of qualified personnel.

The Minister of Home Affairs, Ronald Gajraj at a recent media briefing said, "Violent crimes have not been eliminated from our fair land, but their frequency has certainly been reduced in recent times. This is due mainly to improvements in the crime-fighting capacity of the Police and the assistance rendered by the Guyana Defence Force and other agencies in the maintenance of peace and security, especially on the East Coast of Demerara."
While the security forces have recorded successes at combating crime, the Minister reiterated that persons still needed to be cautious in their daily activities and not become complacent.
