Traffic
Department clamping down on motorists
The Police Traffic department is clamping
down on motorists who are not in compliance with the traffic
laws. Yesterday, traffic police conducted an exercise in the
vicinity of Kingston, Thomas Lands and the seawall area, in
which eighty-one persons were found culpable for breaking
the laws.
This resulted in one person being detained and 23 motor vehicles
detained and lodged in the Police custody. Among the
offences and the number of cases are as follows:
1). Driver failing to wear safety helmet -----------10
2). Pillion without safety helmet---------------------06
3). Unlicensed driver ----------------------------------09
4). Breach of insurance-------------------------------09
5). Unlicensed motor vehicles----------------------10
6). Uninsured motor vehicles------------------------06
7). Uncertified motor vehicles-----------------------12
8). Unregistered motor vehicles--------------------02
9). Ignoring the traffic signs--------------------------07
The operation began between 15:00 hours and
lasted until 18:00 hours. And the Police Force is calling
on all categories of drivers and motor vehicles to comply
with the law, for failing to do so will result in serious
consequences.
On the issue of “Boom Boom Boxes”, while the Traffic
Department continues to stringently enforce the laws, there
are many drivers who are in breach of the Road Service licence,
said Traffic Chief Michael Harlequin. The 1999 Amendment of
the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act 51:02, stipulates
the fine for loud music in mini-buses, the minimum being $20,000
and maximum $40,000.
Harlequin issued a call on all drivers, conductors, passengers
and pedestrians to comply with the rules of the roads and
operate within the confines of the law.
“This will make sure that the loss of life, limb and
damage to property do not occur,” said the Traffic Chief.
