I Reiterate That I Have Not Resigned

I refer to the headline of June 10th and June 11th in the Stabroek News. Both headlines were unfair to me and to the public and both headlines were clearly meant to be sensational.

I want to reiterate my position - I have not resigned as Minister of Health.

In a conversation with Stabroek News yesterday (June 10th), I stated quite clearly that I did not resign as Minister of Health. The story should have died right there. For Stabroek News to carry a headline in the June 11th issue that I confirmed tendering and withdrawing my resignation is unfair. I never addressed the issue of tendering and or withdrawing a resignation.

I have stated publicly several times that I have had many frustrating moments as Minister of Health. The same can be said of the President and all Ministers. The same could be said of editors and directors and others with challenging positions. Very often many of us are moved to wonder why we took our jobs. I have faced these moments many times.

I noted the above sentiments to several persons from the Press yesterday in reference to whether I am frustrated or not. This in no way ought to be taken that I am confirming tendering or withdrawing my resignation. The story itself in Stabroek News rightly did not say that I confirmed tendering and withdrawing my resignation. Yet its headline presented a totally different story.

It is also unfair to anyone that an assertion is being made that unless he or she is removed I would leave. This is untrue. It is unfair to say that my frustration is due to one person. I have had disagreements and I have been dissatisfied with how a number of persons approach their jobs at the Ministry of Health. This would be true in any workplace. Thus, to single out a particular person is unfair to him or to me.

I would like to repeat that I have not resigned my position as Minister of Health and that I have never asked the President to remove anyone as a condition to stay on the job.

Dr. Leslie Ramsammy
