Constructive engagement… Joint
statement still being finalized,
Leaders discuss issues out of Communiqué
The joint statement to be issued by President
Bharrat Jagdeo and Leader of the Opposition Robert Corbin for
their meeting last Monday is still being worked on.
Head of the Presidential Secretariat and High Representative to
the President Dr. Roger Luncheon at his weekly post-Cabinet Media
briefing today, noted that the much anticipated meeting of the
President and the Leader of the Opposition took place on Monday,
but the statement is still being finalized by representatives
of both sides.
Delivering his update on the implementation of the Joint Communiqué
of May 6 and the Follow-Up Agreement of June 18, Dr. Luncheon
said while the statement has not been issued, the two Leaders
had discussions on issues that were not laid out by the Communiqué.
"The meeting has moved beyond commitments enshrined in the
Communiqué and Follow-Up Agreement to bring aboard matters
of public interest that warrant the response of the political
parties," he said. According to Dr. Luncheon the expectation
is that these issues will be addressed in the same manner as outcome
those in the Communiqué.
Dr. Luncheon said an important aspect of the meeting is "emphasis
being placed on the continued role of the high representatives,
and dedicated responsibilities have been thrust upon them for
the next couple of weeks.
The meeting, which began at 15:00hrs concluded about 21:00, and
much work was done on arriving at agreements acceptable to both
parties.
