Media should play an active role in road safety- Traffic Chief
Traffic Chief Michael Harlequin is asking the
media to play an active role in communicating with the public
on road safety.
He made this statement during an interview with the Government
Information Agency (GINA). This came at a time when there have
been several accidents that has resulted in fatalities. “There
is need for support from the media to reinforce the traffic laws,”
said Harlequin.
He added that drivers and cyclists should exercise self-discipline
when they use the roads. The five C’s: care, caution, consideration,
courtesy and concern should be considered.Harlequin is also urging
parents to teach their children the proper way to use the roads.
He noted that too many children are losing their lives on the
roadways.
When asked about the success of the radar gun, an equipment that
monitors the speed of a vehicle, Harlequin responded that to date
there have been 381 cases before the court. He also disclosed
that since the reinforcement of the safety helmet and seatbelt
regulations, there have been 252 cases and 315 cases placed before
the Courts respectively. And in the case of tinted vehicles 39
cases were placed before the court.
Efforts are being made to intensify the number of traffic policemen
to ease the traffic congestion on the East Bank Demerara public
road. According to the Traffic Chief, several traffic ranks from
the Brickdam Police station were dispatched to the area to assist
the other officers.
He pointed out that there are three bridges being built, and this
was causing traffic problems which required the presence of additional
Traffic officers.
