The Guyana Association of Women Lawyers (GA WL) in association with the National Commission on Women (NCW) is please to lunch another in the series of 'Law and You' booklets. This mini booklet highlights some of the constitution amendments which have been enacted and others which have not but which were agreed upon by the Constitutional Reform Conuni.ssion in 200 1.

This series on the Constitution is a part of an on-going educational project which was started in 2001. The GA WL had originally approached the Oversight Committee on Constitutional Reform to work ill collaboration with the Committee in facilitating this type of education project. However, this effort did not bear fruit. The Association eventually received funding for the first phase of the project from the National Democratic Institute to the tune of approximately $lM Guy. Outreach seminars and discussions sessions were held in various community groups throughout the country. Commwtities targeted were Georgetown. Linden, Buxton, Anna Regina, East Bank Demerara, West Coast Berbice and Madhia.

The second phase of the project was to encompass the publication of a booklet with all the constitutional amendments but this did not materialise due to unforeseen circumstances. However, the NCW subsequently readily agree to fund the publication of the infonnationthough on a smaller scale. It was decided that a handy pocket booklet would be better and this has been produced. Harris Art did the typesetting and layout. It is aimed at education the public about the amendments so that they can be more informed about what the Constitution means to them as citizens of Guyana. GA WL and NCW would like the public to appreciate that the Constitution is a living document that contains a nwnber of provisions that detail their fundamental and human rights which must be respected at all times and that the Constitution also contains mechanisms for the enforcement of these rights. "!be booklet will be widely distributed and efforts are already in train to produce another such booklet touching on other aspects of constitutional reform.
