BENEFITING FROM ITEC PROGRAMME
In its quest ensure that high quality
seed of local commodities reach the farming community.
NARI has acquired the services of an Indian Seed Expert, Dr.
Rajpal Singh Kharb. Dr. Kharb's deputation to NARI has been
made possible through the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation
(ITEC) Programme under aegis of the Government of Guyana and
the Republic of India.
Dr. Rajpal Singh Kbarb is a Seed Production
Officer attached to the Department of Seed, Science and Technology,
Haryana Agricultural University (HAU), Hisar, India. Dr. Kharb
holds a Ph.D. degree in Seed Technology from HAU, India with
specialization in seed production;quality testing and storage
of agricultural crops and has peen involved in postgraduate
teachingfor over fifteen years.
While here, Dr. Kharb is expected to assist in manpower development
in seed technology especially vegetable seed production land
its quality testing, germplasm evaluation and its utilization
in crop improvement programmes, evaluation of primary techniques
for the availability of disease free quality propagation materials
and the development of a systematic seed production programme.
Seed production trials and demonstrations will be conducted
on farms with the participation of the farming communities
across Guyana. It is also anticipated that a seed production
programme for Guyana will be deyeloped to fully satisfy the
demands of producers for local and export markets.
Dr. Kharb joins current ITEC expert at NARl
Dr.Virendra Mathur. Dr V.C. Mathur is the
principal Scientist attached to the Division of Agricultural
Economics, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi,
India has graduated with a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics
with specializtion in Agricultural Marketing and Price Analysis
from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi,
India and has been involved in agricultural research and post
graduate teaching for over 20 years. He has also been FAO
Fellow at Cornell University, U.S.A and resource person for:
UNCTAD's Community Diversification and Poverty Reduction Programme
at the South and S.E. Asia Regional Workshops.
In Guyana, Dr Mathur is responsible fur the fruit and vegetable
production planning through the revision of production cycles
and patterns, domestic markets demand and the analysis of
scarcity and glut situation. Along with this, there is an
attempt to develop a production schedule for individual fruit
and vegetables in various regions of Guyana.
