Over 1,500 Birth Certificates distributed in Region Nine
Georgetown, GINA, September 3, 2003
In an effort to keep an accurate count of the
number of persons in the country, the General Registrar’s
Office (GRO) and the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs mounted a
campaign in Region Nine (Upper Essequibo/Upper Takutu) recently
to have persons registered.
During a two-week period a five-man team: three from the GRO and
two from the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs distributed over 1,500
birth certificates. According to Dawn Britton, Supervisor Transcription
(GRO) that number is the highest ever distributed in that Region.
The team visited ten communities and Ms. Britton explained that
persons from other villages came to be registered. Ms. Britton
disclosed that children under the age of 12 and registration of
elderly persons were also included in the process.
In Shulinab Village, 200 birth certificates were distributed,
six persons were given marriage certificates and 10 persons had
their birth certificates renewed.
Below is the distribution of the birth certificates, marriage
certificates, renewal of birth certificates and overseas registration:

Ms. Britton has indicated that she is pleased
with the interest shown by persons in that Region. She highlighted
that a birth certificate is a legal document which establishes
a person’s correct name, place and date of birth and his
nationality.
A birth certificate is necessary to be admitted as a student to
attend a school, enter for examinations, to obtain examination
results, to acquire a Passport or when applying for a job. In
April, over 900 persons were registered in Annai. Plans are afoot
to conduct the same exercise in Region One.
