Toshao lauds
Government's efforts to promote Amerindian Development
Georgetown, GINA, September 3, 2003
The Village Leader (Toshao) of Moco Moco in Region
Nine, Mr. Ronnie Casiano, yesterday lauded the efforts of the
Government in promoting development in Amerindian communities
in Region Nine, especially in Moco Moco and for "recognizing
Amerindians as people who deserve to be recognised like anyone
else."
Mr. Casiano was delivering greetings from his village and the
Region at the national launching of Amerindian Heritage Month.
"We are proud of the assistance given by
Government through the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs," he
said, adding that through the Ministry of Regional Development
the entire Region Nine has benefited from infrastructural development.
"We have seen development, especially after the 2001 elections
that we have never seen before in Region Nine," he said.
He pointed to several new schools, Health Centres, Community Centres,
and Village Offices, among other facilities that are now in place.
Schools, he recalled were of 'thatched roofs and mud walls."
However, these facilities, even though they are located in the
hinterland Regions are comparable to those on the coastland, he
said.
Casiano also acknowledged the contributions of the inter-American
Development Bank, the Canadian International Development Agency
(CIDA) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), among
other organisations that have aided in the development of Moco
Moco and other Region Nine communities.
