Malfunctioning Traffic lights will be repaired

There have been some concerns raised over the malfunctioning of traffic lights in some city streets.
However, in an interview with the Government information Agency (GINA) Traffic Chief Michael Harlequin said that his department in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works is working to rectify the situation.

He stated that the mal-functioning of traffic lights can often cause some confusion on the roadways. He is urging motorists to exercise care and proceed with caution whenever a traffic light is not working.
Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Public Works Ajay Baksh has disclosed that under the Road Safety Programme several locations have been identified for new traffic lights and for old existing ones to be upgraded.

He also noted that under the Road Maintenance Programme the Ministry of Public Works would be assisting in the maintenance of traffic lights.

Surveyors and engineers from the Works Ministry headed by the late Dr. Gowkarran Budhu, a consultant attached to the Ministry of Public Works conducted the road safety exercise.

The Inter-Development Bank (IDB) had funded the exercise which began in 2001. Several recommendations were made for highway safety measures and a five-year highway safety programme.
