The Guyana/Cuba scholarship Programme
- 2004 batch prepares to leave
A GINA Feature
September 15, 2004
The three hundred and fifty scholarships to be awarded to Guyanese students between the ages of 16 and 25 have been selected in disciplines necessary for Guyana 's development.
Most of these awards have already been taken up and within two weeks, another batch will leave for the Spanish-speaking Island.
The Governments of Guyana/Cuba Specialist Awards Scholarship Programme is as a result of a visit to the Caribbean State made by President Bharrat Jagdeo in 2001. President Jagdeo secured the scholarships in various disciplines, after meeting President Fidel Castro.
The scholarships are offered in Medicine, Engineering, Technology, Telecommunications, Agriculture, Sports and Culture.
The Government feels that that there is need to place greater emphasis on specialized training in these areas, to enhance Guyana 's developmental thrust.
The scholarships were advertised early in the year in the national newspapers and interested applicants were invited to submit completed application forms to the Office of the President. The President had specified that every batch of students must include Amerindians, since the scholarships are for all Guyanese students who qualify. Under the scholarship programme, the students sent by the Government of Guyana are given a stipend of CAN $50 per month. The also have the guidance of a Students Affairs Officer in Cuba appointed by the Government of Guyana. The students are expected to serve the Government of Guyana for five years on their return.
Many young people have become qualified for scholarships given improved performances at both the Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC) and the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination Level (CAPE).
Like any other country, Guyana 's development is largely dependent on that of its h uman resources, thus, training and development have become increasingly central to performance improvement strategies throughout the global economies of the world due to organizational and technological advancement.
