Health Ministry to train another batch in varied aspects of health care
Minister Ramsaran urges early submission of applications

Georgetown, GINA, June 21, 2011

One of the Government’s commitments to Guyanese has been the provision of quality health care, delivered from comfortable environments, hence the drive to construct, rehabilitate and upgrade health facilities across the country.
But to ensure that the care delivered is up to standard the Administration has been investing huge sums into training health personnel.
The budgetary allocation for the Ministry of Health’s training programme for the programmes affiliated with its Liliendaal Annex is just under $500 M.
Minister within the Ministry of Health Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, at a press conference this morning told media operatives that the Ministry of Health has advertised for suitably qualified individuals to pursue studies in a number of health programmes such as : Alternative Medex Pathway, Medex, Community Health Worker, Pharmacy Assistant, Rehabilitation Assistant, Audiological Practitioner, Medical Laboratory Technician, X-ray Technician, Environmental Health Assistant, Dentex Diploma, Dentex Certificate, Community Dental Therapist, Dental Assistants, Single Trained/Rural Midwife, Professional Nurse, and Nursing Assistant.
Trainees for the programmes with the exception of Medex will receive a monthly allowance. The duration for the courses mentioned range from six to 42 months and the deadline for applications is July 29. The programmes are expected to commence in September.
He stated that although the Ministry published advertisements with due dates, in the past a number of late applications were received. This, he said will not be tolerated this year and is therefore, urging those with the requisite qualification to apply early.
The Ministry has visited a number of schools in Georgetown, at their career day fairs, in order to attract trainees, however this did not yield adequate responses, Minister Ramsaran said.
Application forms are available from the Regional Executive Officers Offices (REOs) and the Regional Health Officers across the country; or they can be downloaded from the Ministry’s website (www.health.gov.gy). They can be submitted to the REOs offices or the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Brickdam.
Over the past three years, the number of trainees varied from 250 to 500, however due to space constraint and the availability of tutors there will be fewer trainees this year.
Recently the Nursing School Annex on East Street was opened, thereby providing a more spacious and comfortable environment for nursing students.
Minister Ramsaran also mentioned that his Ministry is aggressively pursuing post-graduate studies for nurses, not only for nursing assistants or professional nurses but also for midwives and anesthetic nurses.
Anesthetic nursing, he said, is important because several hospitals have been rehabilitated in the rural and remote areas of Guyana, therefore there will be a need for the full complement of staff.     Minister Ramsaran also stated that the emphasis of the Ministry for the next three years will be on the provision of quality nursing training, at all levels.
