Spring tide alert still in effect
-Agri. Ministry deploys excavator to undertake critical works in Leguan

Georgetown, GINA, January 3, 2009

Subsequent to the ongoing spring tide, which is expected to recede on January 6, overtopping occurred at Waterloo, Leguan, East Bank Essequibo resulting in the accumulation of water in drainage and irrigation canals.
The Ministry of Agriculture’s National Drainage and Irrigation Authority is currently working with the Ministry of Public Works’ Sea and River Defence Unit and the Neighbourhood Democratic Council of Leguan to minimise damages by the intrusion of salt water by the current spring tide.
The Ministry’s NDIA has already responded by deploying an excavator to Waterloo, which is undertaking critical works to prevent further overtopping.
Further, the Ministry of Agriculture and its agencies will continue to monitor the situation closely to minimize the contamination of irrigation water for agricultural purposes by salt water due to overtopping.
Meanwhile, farmers and residents are asked to collaborate with these agencies to take necessary precautions and report any incidence of overtopping or tampering of drainage and irrigation structures. The Ministry of Agriculture’s hotline numbers are 223-7291, 227-5049.
