Health sector in Region Two being boosted

Georgetown, GINA, August 25, 2006.

Residents of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) will see further development in the health sector this year, as several initiatives are currently ongoing to improve infrastructure and other facilities.

Regional Executive Officer (REO) of the Region, Sewahnand Meusai said works are ongoing at the Suddie Public Hospital, which is being renovated to accommodate a diagnostic centre.

When completed, the hospital would be equipped with an intensive care unit, comprehensive laboratory services and would have the capacity to perform surgeries. With the introduction of the surgery unit, it is hoped that the backlog in cases of fibroids and hydrocele will be reduced.

The Suddie Hospital is among four medical facilities that are being converted into state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment centres under an agreement between the governments of Guyana and Cuba.

As a result of this development, the facilities from the Suddie Hospital were transferred to the Oscar Joseph District Hospital at Charity which is now fully equipped to conduct surgeries and X-Rays.

In addition, the Regional Administration will be procuring several pieces of equipment for the Charity and Suddie hospitals, including ECG machines, bio-chemical analysis and heavy-duty washing and drying machines.

Improvement to the Charity hospital is ongoing at a cost of more than $4M and includes refurbishing of the roof and construction of sanitary blocks. A records’ store and canteen at the Suddie Hospital are also being built at a cost of more than $3M.

Meanwhile, several other development projects have been completed in the Region including construction of two drainage and irrigation structures at Good Hope and Richmond.

Construction of four bridges will commence shortly at Sparta, Anna Regina and Perseverance under a $3M project while a nursery school has been constructed at Martindale, Lower Pomeroon. This project was done at a cost of $5.3M.

This year, approximately $1.3B was allocated to Region Two to continue development projects in various sectors.
