Guyana sympathizes with Venezuela on recent flood

Georgetown, GINA Thursday 24 February, 2005.

Minister of Foreign Affairs- Rudy Insanally has expressed sympathy on behalf of Guyana to Venezuela on its recent natural disaster. Venezuela has experienced extreme torrential rainfall that has displaced thousands of Venezuelans leaving many wounded, homeless and dead.

A state of emergency was declared in Caracas and six other states as a result many persons were evacuated to La Guaira's Port. The Red Cross has said this month's devastating floods in Venezuela could be Latin America's worst natural disaster of the 20th century.

President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez attributed the unusually heavy rains, to ecological problems as a result global warming.

As a country also experiencing the sufferings and terrible consequences of a similar tragedy Guyana fully symphatises with Venezuela and hopes that the loss will be minimal and that normalcy be quickly resumed.

Mr. Insanally expressed Guyana’s appreciation for the solidarity and support shown by the Government and people of Venezuela in our own misfortune.

Clean up efforts on the East Coast to continue

Georgetown, GINA, February 24, 2005

Efforts to clean- up the East Coast Demerara and rid villages of large piles of garbage accumulated after the flood are to continue, as several areas still need to be cleaned.

The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development in collaboration with other organizations will spearhead the exercise. Government has observed that there are still huge amounts of garbage in the areas which need to be disposed of and which pose a health hazard to residents.

Today, Colonel Chabilall Ramsaroop, Deputy Chief-of-Staff of the Guyana Defence Force and Chairman of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC), met with representatives of the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, the Guyana Red Cross Society, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDC’s), waste disposal Agencies and other organizations to co-ordinate a further exercise. The exercise will focus more on getting the garbage directly out of the communities.

During the meeting, Colonel Ramsaroop said that new contracts for waste disposal are being explored with the expectation that the contractors will employ persons from within the communities to assist.

Cevon’s Waste Management and Puran Brothers are two of the waste disposal agencies already contracted.

“ We are utilizing the professionals but they have to involve the NDC’s,” he said.

Previously a clean up campaign had started and this entailed getting garbage out of communities and placing it on the East Coast Public Road and Railway Embankment which were to be picked up by garbage trucks. However, Ramsaroop explained that President Bharrat Jagdeo feels that the campaign is not going as fast as he would have liked and the NDC’s were subsequently engaged in the operation.

Secretary- General of the Guyana Red Cross Society, Dorothy Fraser said that the garbage disposal laws of the country seriously need to be implemented and this is the opportune time to do so in order for citizens to become more responsible.

Another Representative said that Buxton Village needs specific attention while Officials of Plaisance/ Industry disclosed that their communities were cleaned through a collaborative effort of its residents.

Exploring means of separating garbage and maybe seeking other locations for dumping the large amount of waste from the East Coast were also discussed.

Presently, the Mandela Avenue Dumpsite is the location being used to dump waste.
