Survey and design on La Grange Independence street completed several weeks ago
A GINA release, August 9, 2004
La Grange Independence Street , Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara) has been one of the priorities under the roads programme for the Ministry of Public Works and Hydraulics for 2004.
Allegations by proprietor of Channel 6, C. N. Sharma that the road is neglected are incorrect because efforts are underway to rehabilitate the road. This was stated by Minister of Public Works and Hydraulics Anthony Xavier in an invited comment to the Government Information Agency (GINA).
“As a matter of fact there has been some hullabaloo in the press and the television by certain people just to score cheap political points. They really don't know exactly what we are doing,” declared Minister Xavier.
He said that the survey and design for the street have been completed before Sharma visited the area and at the moment his Ministry is preparing bill of quantities. Tenders are expected to be advertised within a fortnight.
“So I really don't understand what is this hullabaloo all over the place,” Minister Xavier stated.
The Government of Guyana has embarked on a massive road repairs and rebuilding efforts across the country.

Slow progress reported on the repairs of roads and drains in Region 6
- Minister Nokta intervenes
Georgetown, GINA, August 9, 2004
Progress of works under the Urban Development Programme in New Amsterdam, Rose Hall and Corriverton in Region 6 (East Berbice/Correntyne) was scrutinised by Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Harripersaud Nokta.
The project coordinator had reported slow progress with the repairs of roads and drains to Minister Nokta, prompting the visit.
The Minister said the problem is that the contractor did not finish the proposed repairs of roads and drains in time and the project had to be inspected first-hand at every working site.
The contract for the UDP at New Amsterdam, Corriverton and Rose Hall was started late last year.
The contractor asked the Minister for some more time but was advised that the consultant and the engineers are the officials who will have to examine the request and determine how much more time is needed or could be granted. The contractor complained of bad weather and material problems.
The Minister said these factors are usually taken into consideration by a contractor when signing a contract.
The Minister advised the contractor that currently, there is good weather and there should be progress on the projects. The total cost of the project is $278M.
The completion of the repairs to roads and drains in Region 6 will end phase one of the UDP with the exception of an Abattoir that is to be built in New Amsterdam. Phase two is scheduled to be completed by December 2005, explained the Minister.
The Minister further stated that his engineers have so far indicated that the work done to date is satisfactory.
Some of the residents in the area said that they are pleased with the work the Government is doing. This they say is a great benefit to everyone but they also said that the contractor is working too slowly on the project. They were pleased that the Minister intervened to hasten the works.
