MINISTER HARRIPERSAUD NOKTA VISITS ITUNI.
GEORGETOWN, GINA JULY 18th 2004.
Minister of Local Government and Regional Development
Mr. Harripersaud Nokta, during a visit to the community of ltuni
in Region 10 last Friday, had a first hand look at the two main
utility services there. Minister Nokta, accompanied by Chairman
of the Regional Democratic Council of Region 10, Mr. Mortimer
Mingo and a team of regional officials, first visited the Ituni
Power Station where it was pointed out that the residents currently
receive eight hours of electricity from Monday to Thursday and
12 hours of electricity from Friday to Sunday each week.
Minister Nokta in his assessment of the situation, highlighted
the need for a back up generating set to be permanently placed
at the site, in the event of the current set malfunctioning"
I am happy to know that the people of ltuni are getting approximately
68 hours of power every week, but then in case of a breakdown
the entire community will be without power which is why it is
important to have a back up generating set".
The ltuni Power station is currently supplied with fuel free of
cost by the Government, through the Berbice Mining Company (BERMINE).
An agreement between the Government and the Regional Democratic
Council has seen the Linden Utility Service Cooperation Society
Limited (LUCSL) receiving the subsidized electricity tariffs from
residents LUCSL is in turn responsible for the maintenance of
the electricity system.
Minister Nokta also inspected the operation of the water supply
station which is under the control of the Guyana Water Incorporated.
There the Minister was informed that the pumping station provides
one hour of water every day to the some nine hundred residents
of Ituni, free of cost.
