The team also visited others areas such as Zorg-en-Hoop Housing Scheme, Shieldstown and Hope/Experiment/ Waterloo.
In Zorg-en- Hoop, Minister Baksh promised residents complaining about the lack of electricity in the area, that this year the Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL) will begin wiring their houses for electricity.
However, he urged them to ensure that they complete their payments for their house lots in order to receive electricity.
Other villagers in Shieldstown and Bath Settlement complained about water shortage and the Minister explained to them that they needed to pay their water rates to avoid being cut-off by the water company.
The villagers also said that some were being charged commercial rates instead of domestic rates. To this, the Minister explained that efforts are being made by his Ministry to rectify that problem with GWI so that they may pay domestic rates.
At Hope/Waterloo/Experiment, the largest housing scheme in the Region, road construction is taking place and pipes have been laid under the Government of Guyana/ Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Programme. Drainage facilities have also been set-up in the area.

President Jagdeo meets hundreds during Easter walk-about

Georgetown, GINA, April 10, 2004

President Bharrat Jagdeo today took to the streets of Georgetown for a two-hour walk-about tour as Guyanese were doing last minute shopping for the Easter holiday.

The President said the main reason for meeting with the people was to find out about difficulties they may face and inform them about Government’s efforts to ease any problems.

The president interacted with people on Camp Street, Regent Street, the Vendors Arcade – Upper Regent Street, Water Street, the newly developed vendors’ mall on Water Street and Tiger Bay. The tour started from Regent and Camp Streets and ended in Tiger Bay.

During his walk-about on Regent and Camp streets, the President made several stops at stores and spoke to vendors selling kites on the pavement. The vendors proudly displayed their creations, some of which are hand-painted and uniquely designed.

President Jagdeo showed keen interest in the kites on display and inquired about their prices, designs, sales and competition from foreign-made kites.
A friendly dominoes match, between the President and vendors on Water Street, saw President Jagdeo emerging winner.
During his visit to Tiger Bay, President Jagdeo was eagerly greeted by adults and children, who expressed pleasure at seeing him once again in their neighbourhood.

Upon request, President Jagdeo promised to deliver a kite with accessories to each household by tomorrow.

In his official Easter message, President Jagdeo said, “I join in sharing the unhidden happiness being felt at this time by all Christians as they celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus, an event that is central to their faith.”
All Guyanese will join in the Easter celebration over this weekend. Some of the main attractions are Family Fun Day and kite-flying activities on the seawalls along the coast on Easter Monday. The Lethem Rodeo, Bartica Regatta, and several other entertainment activities are some added attractions as Guyanese celebrate Easter.
