Parika market a huge investment by Government
- President Jagdeo

In an effort to ease the traffic congestion at the Parika ferry stelling and to prepare Parika for development into a township, a site has been identified for the construction of a market to house the vendors.
Work commenced five months ago and the market is expected to be completed by the end of March.
President Bharrat Jagdeo during a visit to the site today expressed satisfaction with the progress of works saying that the market is a huge investment by Government.

President Jagdeo urged youths of Tiger Bay to study hard

President Bharrat Jagdeo treated children in the Tiger Bay area to a party earlier today when he urged them to ensure that they study hard.
The President told the gathering that with education they could become anything they wanted but they must work hard. He pointed out that school re-opens tomorrow and expressed the hope that they are prepared and will attend school regularly.

Residents express satisfaction with operation of pumps in East Coast villages
- during President Jagdeo’s visit

Several villages throughout the country are experiencing flooding due to heavy rainfall over the past week, and Region Four is recorded as being the worst hit.
Earlier today, President Bharrat Jagdeo visited Enmore and Montrose on the East Coast of Demerara to take a first hand look at the situation.
The pumps in the area are in operation around the clock, removing much of the water in both areas.
Residents expressed satisfaction with the pace at which the water is receiving saying the process was is usually slower.

Parika market a huge investment by Government

Georgetown, GINA, January 4, 2004

In an effort to ease the traffic congestion at the Parika ferry stelling and to prepare Parika for development into a township, a site has been identified for the construction of a market to house the vendors.
Work commenced five months ago and the market is expected to be completed by the end of March.
President Bharrat Jagdeo during a visit to the site today expressed satisfaction with the progress of works saying that the market is a huge investment by Government.
The market, which is being constructed at a cost of $57M funded by Government through the Social Impact Amelioration Programme (SIMAP), will house 635 vendors. The building will have adequate sanitary and water facilities, along with parking spaces.
With the completion of the project, it is expected that the traffic congestion at the stelling would be eliminated. Vendors now flock the street on Thursdays and Sundays to sell their commodities.
The market is being constructed approximately quarter of a mile from the stelling.
President Jagdeo expressed the hope that the market would be completed on time.
Plans are in the pipeline to develop the Parika area into a township. Already the area has facilities including banking institutions, and roads now occupied by vendors are to be widened.
After inspecting the site, the President walked along the streets and greeted vendors and shoppers alike. He promised to visit the area again at a later date.
The President also visited Enmore and Montrose on the East Coast of Demerara for a first hand look at flooding and the operation of the pumps in those areas.
Later he held a party for children of the Tiger Bay area in Georgetown. President Jagdeo is expected to depart for India later this evening.
Accompanying the President were Presidential Advisor on Investment Maniram Prashad, Regional Chairman Esau Dookie and other Regional officials.

President Bharrat Jagdeo treated children in the Tiger Bay area to a party earlier today when he urged them to ensure that they study hard.
The President told the gathering that with education they could become anything they wanted but they must work hard. He pointed out that school re-opens tomorrow and expressed the hope that they are prepared and will attend school regularly.
He expressed best wishes for the New Year and encouraged parents to support their children in their education as he emphasized the importance of an education in today’s world.
Although it was a rainy day, the President expressed the hope that the children will enjoy themselves while he shared food and drink.
Earlier toady, the President visited Parika where he inspected construction works on the new market. He later held a party for children of the Tiger Bay area.
Additionally, President Jagdeo visited Enmore and Montrose on the East Coast of Demerara to assess the situation, since several areas are flooded due to heavy rainfall.
The President is expected to depart later this evening for India.

Several villages throughout the country are experiencing flooding due to heavy rainfall over the past week, and Region Four is recorded as being the worst hit.
Earlier today, President Bharrat Jagdeo visited Enmore and Montrose on the East Coast of Demerara to take a first hand look at the situation.
The pumps in the area are in operation around the clock, removing much of the water in both areas.
Residents expressed satisfaction with the pace at which the water is receiving saying the process was is usually slower.
President Jagdeo noted that the has improved significantly since a lot of the water has subsided. He said the problem is aggravated by the Coastal Belt being below sea level. Residents stated that in the past they would have to wait for the Guyana Sugar Corporation (Guysuco) to drain its own lands before it could offer assistance to the villages but now the village has a pump station, which is functioning.
Chief Executive officer of the National Drainage and Irrigation Board Ravi Narine said they are ensuring that the pump stations work around the clock to alleviate the situation. He noted that the pump at Enmore has the capacity to remove 60 cubic feet of water per second.
At Montrose, the President inspected the pump station, which is presently.
At a recent media conference Ravi Narine had stated that rainfall exceeding one inch per day will cause flooding in the Region Four area.
Sluices and pump stations at Cane Grove, Strathavon, Hope Estate, Victoria, Golden Grove, Enmore, and Triumph/Beterverwagting are working on a 24-hour basis.
Guysuco is assisting in ensuring that the sluices and pump stations, at Ogle, Montrose, Good Hope, Hope, Foulis, Strathspey, and Annandale are maintained and functioning properly.
Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Other Crops and Livestock Satyadeow Sawh visited Enmore earlier when he met residents and inspected the area.
Accompanying the President today were Minister Sawh, and other Regional Officials.
